The last: the piece of wood that decides everything
It is not the leather that makes a shoe comfortable, but the form it is built on. About the last — why it is adjusted per client and kept for years.
In a footwear atelier, the most important object is neither the sewing machine nor the leather. It is a piece of wood or hard plastic shaped like a stylised foot: the last.
What it actually does
Leather is soft and shapeless. The last gives it shape. The upper, cut and stitched flat, is dampened and pulled over the last with lasting pincers, millimetre by millimetre, then left to settle. When the last comes out, the leather has memorised the form.
This means that toe shape, internal volume, the way the shoe holds the foot — all come from the last, not from the design. Two pairs with the same pattern, on different lasts, wear completely differently.
Why “size 42” says almost nothing
Size describes one dimension: length. But a foot has at least three — length, width, instep. A production shoe is built on an average last, calculated across a population. If your foot is wider or has a higher instep than average, you will feel it at every step, however expensive the leather.
The adjustment
Made to order, we start from a base last close to your foot's shape and adjust it: material is added where volume is needed, taken away where there is too much. It is an operation that demands experience — one extra millimetre at the instep is felt, two are seen.

The last stays yours
After the first order, the adjusted last is kept in the atelier, labelled with your name. The second pair needs no measuring: you choose the model and the leather, and the rest is already solved. It is also why long-standing clients order their second and third pairs far faster than their first.
How the difference feels
A shoe built on the right last has no “breaking-in period”. It does not blister you in the first week. It does not slip at the heel. It simply sits. And ten years later, when the leather has moulded for good, it is the most comfortable object in the wardrobe.
