Shoes pinching? What can be fixed and what cannot
Not every fitting problem needs a new pair. What an atelier can fix, in how many days and at roughly what cost.

Before giving up on an ill-fitting pair, it is worth knowing what can be done. Many problems are solved in a single day at the atelier.
Can be fixed
Tight across the width. Stretched on a last with a device applying controlled pressure over 24–48 hours. Realistic gain: 3–5 mm. Beyond that the model visibly deforms.
Presses at one specific point (a joint, a bunion). The leather is thinned locally from inside and stretched at that point. The most effective intervention of all.
Slips at the heel. A leather pad is added at the heel, or the counter is rebuilt. Simple repair, immediate result.
Sole hurts after a few hours. The insole is replaced with a moulded one. Effectively, the shoe becomes another shoe.
Heel too high or unstable. It can be shortened by 1–2 cm and rebalanced, if the model allows.
Cannot be fixed
Length. A shoe one size too small stays too small. Length comes from the last and does not change.
A shoe far too large. Partly compensated with insoles and pads, but it never becomes a fitted shoe.
Leather cracked at the flex. The fibre is broken; it can be masked, not repaired.
When it is worth it
On a good shoe, almost always: an adjustment costs a fraction of a new pair. On a cheap shoe, rarely — the cost approaches its price.
How to proceed
Bring the pair to the atelier or send us photos on WhatsApp showing the spot that bothers you. We tell you honestly whether it can be done, how long it takes and what it costs — including when the answer is “not worth it”.
Frequently asked
- Can a shoe be widened?
- Yes, by 3–5 mm across, stretched on a last with a dedicated device. Beyond that the model deforms.
- Can a shoe be lengthened?
- No. Length comes from the last it was built on and cannot be changed.
- My shoe slips at the heel. What is done?
- A leather pad is added at the heel, or the counter and lining are rebuilt. A simple repair.
- Is it worth repairing a cheap shoe?
- Rarely. The cost approaches its price. On a good shoe, almost always yes.
