Exotic leather: python, croc and what to know first
The difference between real exotic leather and embossed texture, what the law says, and how to care for them. No myths.
Exotic leather is the most misunderstood material in footwear. Here are the things that matter, without the mythology.
Real vs embossed
Real exotic leather — python, crocodile, alligator, lizard — has genuine scales, each piece unique, and comes with provenance documents. It costs several times more and is internationally regulated.
Croc-embossed is bovine leather with the pattern heat-pressed into it. The look is very close, the price a fraction, and in wear it often holds up better. Our Havana and Notte models are exactly this — and we say so plainly, because some shops do not.
The legal side
Trade in exotic skins is regulated by the CITES convention. Legal leather travels with documents; without them a pair can be seized at a border. When we work real exotic leather, the documents come with the shoe.
Does it last longer?
Not necessarily. Scales are more sensitive to abrasion and dryness than well-tanned box calf. A beautiful exotic shoe is not automatically a durable one — durability comes from construction.
How to care for it
Neutral moisturising cream applied with a finger along the scales. Never hard wax — it collects between scales and turns white. Never a stiff brush. Slow drying, away from heat.
When it is worth it
When you want a piece that stands out and wear it occasionally. For an everyday shoe, good box calf is the smarter choice — and lasts longer.
